    1964 coupe

Gentlemen, with regards to mid-years (63-67) just how was the engine plus transmission, if it was one complete assembly?? , lifted and dropped into/ onto the frame? Today, I was informed by a reliable source, that engine HOOKS were NOT used until the 1967 model. Getting close to my engine drop onto a bare frame (no body), and I'm not crazy about the removal of the carburator from the Aluminum intake and using the 4 bolt studs for an engine lift device to drop my assembly ( engine plus 4 speed transmission) into/onto my frame. Please comment, thank you, Jack J.

Thanks Harry. Appears to me a 63-64 picture. Movable overhead air hoist with scissor grippers much like old fashioned ice block carrying tool.

I installed a 396 with harmonic balancer, water pump, fuel pump, exhaust manifolds and clutch/bell housing using a 4-bolt adapter plate connected to the intake manifold. No problems at all using a 2-ton aluminum A-frame trolley hoist over the nose of the car.

The key is to be sure to use a high quality bolts (grade 8) and be sure that the bolts are installed through the lift plate and screwed as far into the intake manifold threads as possible BUT NOT BOTTOMED OUT IN THE HOLES. Use washers to bring the bolts up snug but NOT TIGHT against the lift plate. Another good idea is to be sure the weld that attaches the lifting eye to your lift plate is good with no cracks. Possibly have it (the weld) dye penetrant checked for cracks. Just my 2 cents.

            Regards,

            James

Just use longer bolts to connect a chain from a water pump bolt to a bell housing bolt. Attach the hook of the lifting chain to the balance point on the chain attached to the engine. Alternatively, get a set of lifting eyes for a later engine and simply remove them after you are finished.

I would " never " lift or drop an engine using an adapter plate attached to an aluminum intake manifold - big block or small block. On a big block cylinders heads are drilled and tapped on the ends for either 3/8" or 7/16" bolts, use a chain with long bolts for this. On some small blocks, they may also be drilled and tapped on the ends of the cylinder heads. Also, use a chain attached at the four corners of the intake manifold with long bolts screwed into the cylinder heads.
