Re: 1966 rocker panel birdcage brackets; when did it change from 6 to 3 per side?

Asking the above question again. Both sets of the rocker panels I have have 12 holes in the bottom flange. Is this because they are asymmetrical and each is usable on both sides? Does this necessarily mean they are repro's?

Yes, I believe all the 66 rocker moldings have 12 holes for installation. I believe there are actually at least 3 variations of the rocker moldings.

      1. Production moldings - I can't remember where this was discussed, or whether it is actually correct. There was some discussion that the original 66 production rocker molding have a smooth front edge, i.e. the ridges as viewed from the side do not wrap around the front. As seen in the attached picture on the left.

      2. Over-the-counter GM Service replacements - At least some of them. I purchased a set of NOS moldings when restoring a 66 and the front edge looked like the ones in the picture on the right.

      3. Reproductions - As far as I know, they look like the GM service replacement moldings.

Also, as for attachement, yes as state in response #14 above, spot welded in 4 places. Attached is AIM UPC 1 BOLT/WELD sheet A4. If you look closely you will see four Xs on each bracket marking proper spot weld location. I highlighted one bracket with red Xs.

          Thanks, Don!

I have 4 pieces. One is clearly used and has bare ends. Another has painted edges and is used but very good condition. The remaining pair are unused and have painted front and rear edges. I would "guess" they are GM replacement. I'm going to use those.

Another related question. When fitting the (LIC) replacement fiberglass body tabs (F&R) that backup the rocker panels, should they fit within the rocker panel's rolled edge, or should the rolled flat edge be flush with the rolled flat end on the aluminum panel?
