    C1 Rear Springs

Just checking to see if anyone has seen any rear springs with the ends of the leaves other than square. I have both ends of one short leaf which look to be ground off and the front of a third leaf and rear of one of the second longest leaves seemingly altered. There is no pattern. Two leaves from one side and one from the other. I was sure that a PO had done it, but then I saw a picture in Bob Baird and Tom Howey's book which looks exactly like the rear of my "altered" second leaf. All of the ends have that little curve that they are supposed to have. I can't imagine why this would be done; by GM or by a PO. It's a '62. Has anyone seen anything like this? Thanks!

I haven't seen it, the two leaf spring "packs" I rebuilt for 61 and 60 both had squared off ends, front and rear, on all the leaves...

Thanks, Frank. I expect there won't be anyone who's seen anything like this.

Would the grooves line up with bulge in sidewall? Hard to run really wide tires on a C1.

            Gary,

Is the bottom spring grooved or any identifications marks or Julian date on the 5 leaf springs you bought in 1971?

                Gary,

Back in the day, to counter act the rear springs saging, lots of people would add the 5th leaf to raise the rear end.

Stencil marks indicate an after market replacement spring.

                Thanks for posting.

Which leaf would be added? Obviously not the small one. Did the OEM 5 leaf spring have the same leafs as the 4 leaf and then added a 5th leaf, if so which one?

                    Gary,

A small spring 5th spring was often added to raise sagging rear.

Don't have the 5 leaf spring blueprint or specs to determine if the 5 leaf springs are the same as the 4 leaf springs with an added 5th small leaf.

Comparing to my 4 leaf 62, rough measurements, the small leaf on the 5-leaf spring is shorter than my small leaf on my 4-leaf 62 while the next leaf on the 5-leaf appears to measure close to the small leaf on my 62. Also, the long leaf on the 5-leaf is not grooved while the other 4 are grooved and of course the long leaf on my 4-leaf 62 is fully grooved.
