    tach cable noise

Hey Guys, Need a little help. The tack cable on my 58 is making noise. I think it may need some lube. Here is my question: can the cable be pulled out to lube from where it mounts to the distributor. taking it out from under the dash is not a job i am interested doing. Bad back. thanks,
    Bruce

    Bruce,

Sorry but the cable comes out from the tach end! Corvette Central sells what is called CableEase to lube speedometer and tach cables. Do not use axle grease as it will work it's way back in the tach head and you'll be pulling the dash.
Also, use Cable Ease very sparingly and don't slop it on the cable as bad results will follow.

Bruce I have always used graphite to lube speedo and tach cables. You can try injecting some in either end of the cable but unless the friction point is very near that end it won't help. And. If the cable has not been lubricated with graphite before - you must clean the cable and casing before you apply the graphite, otherwise it will turn into gum (not good). Another approach would be the disconnect the cable from your tach, pull the cable out (leaving the cable housing in place) and lubricate the cable with "Lubriplate" then reinsert the cable in the casing, and reconnect the tach. Good luck.

Make sure it's the cable. My tach would make a noise especially in the winter, turned out to be a problem with the tach itself and needed to be rebuilt.

Here is what I've done to solve the issue; it happened twice on my 61 over the decade I owned it. I simply unscrewed the tach cable from the generator drive and with a rag wrapped around it dumped a good bit of the Kable-Ease

          (available here: https://www.amazon.com/Ags-Kable-Eas...2490809&sr=8-3 )

into the barrel of the screw on connector...

I then shake the snot out of that end of the cable and the lube will settle down into the cable sheath; I then repeat this 3 or more times and hook the cable back to the generator drive and the noise has stopped after a bit of driving....that lube WILL work its way up into the cable sheath - just give it time.

It costs next to nothing to try, is easy to do and may just fix you up...

I removed mine albeit after I removed the steering wheel and driver's seat. I used some lube with graphite in it called Kable-Ease. Cured the noise problem... Al
