    66 Engine Stamp

Hey all. Looking at this 66 Engine stamp. Car has been in the same family for years. Low miles and may be coming up for sale this year. What say you guys on this stamp? I have seen the car but it was several years ago. Been in storage since 2016 and now not running. I would like to buy it but would like some good eyes and opinions on the stamp. I'd say it's legit but doesn't look good. Serial number looks good and matches VIN. Body date H14.

my opinion, only the factory could mess that up that bad. So, it would judge 'not typical' for date stamp, but good for vin and broach. And I think original.

Thanks Don. I always read about these goofy stamps but haven't run into too many first hand. I agree with your opinion but wanted to get some input. Many thanks !!!

The grain looks good and the character fonts look good. It looks like it was stamped 0450 and it was corrected sloppily to 0405

According to the late George Barlos who worked at St. Louis Corvette as well as other GM plants, the GM protocol was that if up to 2 characters were stamped in error, they were to be "X'd out" and the correct characters stamped above. If 3 or more characters were in error, then the entire stamping would be ground out and re-stamped. However, even as George admitted, things were not always done as they were supposed to be done. A final inspector was not going to reject a car because the stamping was not done correctly.

I have no doubt, at all, that this was an engine plant stamping mistake and correction.

By the way, I really miss George Barlos. He was a wealth of information besides being a great guy. I used to love to talk with him.

I have a 67 with a similar issue on the VIN. Sometimes you just have to embrace unusual characteristics. Mine always judges just fine.
