1967 convertible--removing shims from body mount behind driver door

Looking for help on how to remove some shims behind the body mount just behind the drive door. The car is basically assembled but all body mount bolts are still loose. The door gap it tight at the rear of the driver door ( no more play left in hinges) and I was thinking that removing 2-3 shims would help. What is the best way to lift the body up in this area to pull some shims out?

What is the safest way to lift up on the body to avoid unnecessary stress to the fiberglass, paint etc. I took my side pipes off and I was thinking of using a 2 x 6 with a floor jack to push up on the bird cage near the rear part of the door. I figure just enough to unweight the mount to pull shims out. Is there a better and safer way??

Removing shims at this location will make the problem worse. As Tom says remove shims from rear location. Also, you can't get a accurate reading of your gaps with the body mount bolts loose.

          Dave,
your plan will work fine, just move slow and make sure the car is lifted evenly on both sides to prevent stress on the body. A helper would probably be a good idea and make the job smoother.
