I'm familiar with the roll pin but not with what looks like a crimped ended pin in the bottom gear of my '61 dual point 1110891 distributor. My question is removal of this pin. I ground off one side of the crimp and tried to drive it through but no go. Do I grind off the other side also and try to push it through? Do I replace it with a roll pin? Thanks.

I have never seen this type of distributor gear retainer on a Corvette distributor. But, I have little experience with C1 era distributors. The problem I see, though, is that if you can't drive it out from the side from which you've removed the head, I don't see how you'll be able to drive it out from the other side if you remove the head on that side. In other words, I highly doubt that it's a tapered pin. But, you have little to lose by removing it and trying. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C1 dual point gear pin removal
i've encountered such distributor pins in some c-1 instances. i just ground the head and then used one of my FORD hammers(real Ford mechanics only need 10 tools for fomocos--10 different sized hammers). anyway then the ones i've dealt with simply drove out. mike- Top

Re: C1 dual point gear pin removal
As suggested previously, grind off the other end too then drive the pin out. It's not tapered and probably just expanded enough to provide a tight fit. Note and mark the orientation of the gear tooth with the rotor and reassemble. Cut a length from a common nail of the appropriate diameter to use as a replacement pin, install and peen both ends. This advice came from Don Baker, a dist rebuilder who was very helpful to me with my 891. 815-498-9522- Top

Re: C1 dual point gear pin removal
I had the same issue on one. As I recall, the gear was a bit loose. The pin appeared to be deformed a bit.
I ground off one end and used a drift to knock it out. I then used a split pin and swedged both ends after insertion.

As I'm sure you know, the spring pin (split pin) was used on all 1963+, if not earlier, distributors without any sort of peening. I've never heard of one of these coming out. Of course, nothing is lost by peening. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
