    C2 Firewall J-Clip Fasteners

Looking for a source for small Phillip head screws to secure J-clips to my firewall. This is for a 64, April 7 build date, convertible with an AO Smith body. A couple of issues here. The NCRS Judging Guide states that the five J-clips mounted on the firewall are secured with Phillips head screws. The 64 AIM indicates that these clips are "bonded" to the firewall.

Does anyone know of a source or a part number for these screws? I can't find a p/n in the AIM and all vendor sources I have checked sell the clips with small pop rivets - which I believe were used to install the clips sometime after 64.

I am attaching a pic of one of the screws I removed from my car. AMK Products carries a screw that looks identical to my original screw and the dimensions are the same to. If there is no Corvette vendor source for these screws do you feel the AMK product will suffice? I do not want to resort to bonding or using rivets.

    Re: C2 Firewall J-Clip Fasteners

    Ed,

It's funny but the firewall J-clips on my late production 1965 AO Smith built car equipped with a/c are mostly but not all installed with pop rivets. I've noticed the same thing on a 1965 St. Louis built 396 equipped car that was built 66 cars after. These are the clips in the lower positions, not the ones just below the rear drip rail. I wonder if this had something to do with the cars having the battery moved to the drivers side which required extra firewall clips for the battery cables. Just an observation.

Good luck on your search for the screws.

    James

      Ed,
Have a late Mar64 car, the clips are all secured by black Phillip screws however they are all round heads not what you found.
Most changes to the 64 occurred in early April - general observation of many cars but unsupported by documentation
As for my confidence level of that screw being correct, it's high since I've owned the car since Aug 67 and maintained it myself.
Naturally we must remember it is a production line car so what screw was used where, when, how is not an exact science.
Sorry for bad picture but you get the idea. (YES - Don has a good picture)

Alan, Don, ---- thanks for the pics and raising my confidence level that the phillips screws are "correct" for an April build 64. Now the challenge will be to find them or suitable substitutes. I am pretty sure that these clips, whether they were bonded, riveted or screwed into place were installed before the engine compartment got a shot of "black-out" treatment. I removed a few of mine and there is clean, like new fiberglass behind the clips. As for the screws I found - Alan, I agree with you, the heads are probably not "round enough" to serve as a suitable substitute - the hunt continues!

Try Standard Parts Section Grp. 8.977 Screw, Truss trim head cross recess tapping PN 274998 No. 14-10 x 5/8 cad
since you give no size this might be what your looking for.

David - thank you. First, I should have stated that the screw length is 3/8 of an inch and the width of the integrated washer is the same. That said, I would like to explore the "Standard Parts Section......" but..... I have to aplologize and ask, what exactly is the Standard Parts Section and where or how do I look up a part in it. Thanks again.

My 64 is also a March built car, the screw you show resembles the ones that hold the glove compartment liner in place, my 64 has the dome phillips screws holding the clips like Alans, mine is St Louis car.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

Gallant effort Dan but no brass ring. The fasteners for the glove box have a head and integrated washer that appear to be identical to the firewall screws but they are "machine screws". The firewall fasteners are sheet metal screws. The search goes on.

Ed, remove one that holds the felt to the frame, not the ones that hold the frame to the dash. Look at Long Island part 13-05A

Dan, thanks again - I pulled one of the screws from my glove box - it is identical in appearance but.... considerably larger, the glove box screw is a bit more than a half inch long and the head/washer is much larger as well.
