My 66 has lock washers under the bolt heads. If memory serves every one I've ever taken down to do lower arm bushings on has had lock washers under the bolt heads and a rectangular nut plate over for the two bolts.- Top

I think you're thinking of the single bolt & nut that is used on the aft side of the lower A-arm. GM did indeed switch to a locking nut, like a distorted thread nut, at some point in the C2 era, maybe '67. But initially it was a lock washer and regular nut.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I've talked with another person with photo documentation of a '66 Bowtie that shows the same thing, i.e., a lock washer is used against the bolt head, in contrast to what the '66 AIM shows. This is another good example of the AIM not always reflecting the reality on the production line.
