    54 backfire problem

My 54 has been out twice since getting it out from winter storage. It has been driven about 100 miles with fresh gas. I was going out again and it has low power and a distinct sharp backfire. I pulled the air cleaner off and only the front carb. was popping. The pop seems to follow the engine RPM's. Any suggestions?

Carburetor popping can be a sign of an extreme lean condition. So probably the front carb is not getting any fuel. That would cause the front two cylinders to be waaaay down on power, consistent with what you've observed.
