Re: Steering issues after restoration
Sounds like problems with your box rebuild. Did you set the worm gear correctly? This is more important than the sector lash adjustment. Follow the procedure in your Chassis Service Manual exactly with a pull gauge on the steering wheel, you will have to disconnect the pitman arm. I'm assuming that you replaced all the bearings (particularly the worm end bearings) and bushings when you did your rebuild and that your worm and sector gears are good and capable of achieving good meshing, particularly at high point. When you say replaced the steering components, did that include the tie rod ends? worn tie rod ends cause loose steering. Usually its best to send a box out to an expert for rebuilding rather than attempt it yourself without prior experience. I used to rebuild these but now send them to Bairs who do an excellent job with quick turnaround for $150. Lastly, with radial tires set camber to 0 deg, caster to +2-1/2 deg, and toe to 1/16". If using bias ply go with the specs in the manual. Good luck.- Top

Re: Steering issues after restoration
Thanks for your time and thoughts. I rechecked the alignment, all was fine, caster around 2.5. I removed the gear, and moved the wheels through a typical steering motion, they moved hard. I disconnected the tie rod ends, and each wheel moved easily individually. But the idler arm was nearly froze, requiring very high force to make any movement. I assembled the chassis a couple a years ago with all new Moog parts, including a new idler. I order a replacement from Amazon, they have everything, hopefully will be back on road next week.- Top
