Old rubber gas lines and add-on fuel filters

Today I watched a YouTube video about a restored '68 Chevelle L34. It looked nice but I couldn't get past the spliced fuel line with the aftermarket fuel filter. It looked like a shade tree wart on a professionally restored car. And reminded me of this post on cliffshighperformance.com by Cliff Ruggles:

I didn't get past "I read some where lately...."
Even if you forgive the spelling glitch, such a prelude almost always leads to follow on nonsense....

Judging mechanical experience with spelling skills? It's like choosing a plumber by his cologne. With that said, the visitor asking the question has the spelling issue, not Cliff Ruggles.

IMG_2073.jpgYes, those old flexible lines and add-on fuel filters are very dangerous. Luckily, Corvettes usually have good setups in that regard, mostly steel lines. But when in doubt, replace the flexible lines and factory inline filters with new ones. Tankers have a special problem with flexible lines, they have lots more to inspect and replace......

You blew by the salient point, the quoted thread has a guy cycled up by something he "read somewhere lately"....
Apparently not a source worth remembering or something shared by someone credentialed - just some vapid commentary he came across...

But then I don't care for smelly plumbers either...

I would say most vintage vehicles utilized rubber hose with clamps before and up to the fuel pump. It is the pressurized fuel line between the pump and carb that presents the issue. If it has to be done, I would suggest using a braided hose like Russell or Aeromotive with some better fittings and a filter more substantial than the clear plastic ones which, IMHO, should only be used on gravity flow systems such as old tractors or lawnmowers.
