    1956 Inner Fender Mastic Question

These pictures were taken inside the front fenders of a 1956 Corvette VIN xxx03374 which I believe is a build date of about July 10, 1956. The question raised is does this mastic excess represent either a repair or replacement of the front clip? The current owner has owned the car for 11 years, there have been no repairs or repainting in that period, and the finish on the outside of these areas is fine, no cracking or crazing. Since the mastic does not go all the way across the fenders, it would seem unlikely that this is a clip replacement, but I would like your opinions on whether this is typical of how these cars left the factory or is this representative of some kind of repairs.
    Thanks

My 56 #4200 has some extra bonding adhesive at the front of the bonding strip above the wheel well on both sides. I have seen other 56s with the similar added bonding adhesive in these areas.

Thanks Mark. So you think this came from the factory this way?

        Bill,

A lot of 56 & 57's have some areas with what appears to be either rough globs of black resin or under coating on some portions of the inner fenders.

Your photo "IMG_2421" looks like there's more there than the other globs I've seen. A Judge if they do a visual inspection might question the big glob.

You might get a very bright light and shine into the glob and see if you can see any signs of fiberglass repairs. If cloth was used you might be able to see the fiberglass grains running a different way. If chopped glass was used might show chopped strands ends. Or if no glass was used you might not see any fiberglass grain at all in that area.

Good luck with your close up examination.

        Gary
