Differential Bracket Mounting Holes Wont Line Up - 64

Spot on Duke, that is exactly right... A little time spent in the GM documentation before tackling a job can save some grief...from the '67 shop manual..but pretty sure it applies to all midyears. The spring force causes the nose of the axle rotate up when the bracket is removed. IIRC the shop manual says to place a wood block between the nose of the axle and the body when disconnecting the front bracket, or you can use a pry bar between the bracket an axle to lever the axle to a point where you can install the bolts.
There is no need to disconnect the spring.

I just replaced the driveshaft in my 64. I dropped the diff bracket to make it easier. The new driveshaft went in nicely. When getting the diff bracket tightened down I noticed that the front holes won’t line up with the diff. I have tightened the cushion bolt as far as I can. The cushion is the original. It’s obvious that the cushion needs to be compressed another 1/8 to 1/4 inch in order for those front holes to line up. I did not remove the long back bolt and just swung the bracket downward out of the way of the rear U joint. What’s the trick? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

I would not re-use the cushions, especially if they are very old (like, original to the car).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The upper cushion, GM #3788637 is still available from GM.
The lower cushion, GM #3795333, was discontinued about 2 years ago. Probably available in the aftermarket. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
