    Replacement Gas Cap '72

    https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=3601818&cc=1040960&jsn=306

    Thanks.

    PS - No matter what I try for searching the forums, it never gives back what I expect. In this case it said no posts exist when I search as "gas cap"...

    I searched tank and cap and that gave me 10+ pages of threads in response. Don't know if any are applicable to your issue. You know you need to put and between two words you want to search for? This is described under Searching in the FAQs in tiny tool bar above. I ran gas and cap and got nothing, same as you. I also added the 70-72 icon to your post. It is helpful to always place the corresponding icon on your thread. You know you can search all threads that have used your icon by placing your cursor on the icon of any thread, and click. Search that way and you may score a thread about the cap for a 72. Good luck

      The original fuel cap for your application was GM #3994339. That cap is still available today from GM at a GM list price of about 63 bucks. The original cap and the SERVICE cap available today were both manufactured by Stant. As far as I have been able to determine, the Stant cap and the GM #3994339 available today are identical. Might there be some nuance of difference between the original 3994339 and the 3994339 available today? I guess there might be.

        $13.71 with free shipping from RA sound a bit better, doesn't it. Maybe get the Stant cap then take it to a dealer who has the GM part in stock to compare them. Even if different, the Stant is an inexpensive back up cap.

        EDIT: RA also sells an AC Delco cap for $32: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...040960&jsn=541
        It looks similar to the Stant but with a different finish. I wonder which is closer to the GM part?

          The coloration of the finish on the GM cap varies just as the finish on the Stant cap varies. While I'm definitely not one to believe that OEM and aftermarket are the same, in some cases they are. This is one of those cases. I have several GM #3994339 caps as well as several of the Stant equivalent. I've carefully compared them and find them to be absolutely identical with some variation of surface finish coloration. The AC Delco cap in the Rock Auto ad is at the extreme. I've never actually seen one "in the flesh" that had that coloration.

            Thanks I think I need all the luck I can get. I read through the FAQ a while back and did so again today and still get funky results...
            I tried "gas cap" (w/quotation marks) = no results;
            gas and cap = no results.

            Here's a screenshot of the window and what it looks like when I'm searching:
            Untitled.png
            I've tried this in advanced search as well as the general search in the black bar below Society, and Search Forum to the right of the Forum Tools in the Technical forum.

            Is this better to take to the Support Feedback forum to figure out? Could this somehow be a browser issue (Firefox for Mac)?

            I've generally left off Post Icons because I didn't spot a way to search by them...
