Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
George,
For some reason you seem averse to post a picture of your VIN tag and trim tag along with a picture of your engine pad stamp. We've been asking you for these same items on the CF since the 16th of June.
You need to help us so that we can help you.Leif

Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
Your title shows S or A? I can't imagine much can be done about this anomaly now, 53 years after you bought the car, nor does anything need to be done about it. You just continue to renew at license renewal time, as you've been doing. When it comes time to sell the car, you will likely need to engage someone higher up the food chain than the counter clerk at your local DMV.

Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
After I purchased my 65 when I got out of college, I moved several times with my job. Twice when I had to title the car in a new state, I caught the DMV person inputting the car's vin # with a 5 instead of the S. Both times I was fortunate to have caught it when I did. I had to have a police officer verify the car's vin # matched the previous states title when I moved to a new state. It will be a problem as is when you or someone tries to sell the car, esp if it is out of state. Now is the time to get it correct with a visit to the local DMV office.- Top

Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
Assuming VIN tags/plates were produced with Addressograph / Multigraph machines (and I don't know that for sure)...it just so happens that the letter "A" is just left of the letter "S" on a "standard" keyboard. A quick web search shows two vintage A/M machines with standard keyboards ("A" left of "S"). Other posts on this TDB have referenced typos...could this be another example?thx,

Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
Just to stir the pot a little: I once judged a rubber bumper C3 (NOT at an NCRS event) that had a convertible VIN, but the car was a coupe. On C3s, with the VIN behind the window, it is easy to determine if the window has been out. This one had not been out.
It defies imagination to believe that St Louis never made a mistake in the VIN given the number of cars produced.
When the insurance company sold my 1969 that I wrecked after 6 weeks and 3800 miles, they sent the corrected title back to me. The clerk at the dealership had made a mistake in the numbers in the serial part of the paperwork when I bought the car. The state registration was wrong too, but who checks the registration on a new car.
This is probably why new cars have bar codes on the VIN.

Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
A friend of mine just purchased a New Honda.
Everything was completed and when they left the lot a final check was made on the VIN.
They had test driven a Pilot and the purchased a CRV.
The vehicle on the paperwork was the car Pilot!
It could have been a great deal, the Pilot for the CRV price.
It was all legal. But they did the right thing and had the paperwork fixed.
So, yes they do check but maybe not the purchaser. LOL- Top

Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
If it's any consolation, I have a clear as a bell picture of a 1968 Corvette coupe VIN plate with a "W" in place of the "S" in the VIN on the pillar. This was also a one owner low mile 1968 Corvette. I won't post the picture and reveal the ID number, but I just looked at it and confirmed it. Nothing you can do but embrace the uniqueness of this error.- Top

Re: Serial number conundrum '67 Corvette
Until there is a picture we can make guesses and draw our own conclusions all day long. This car may not never be shown, BUT if it showed up on the judging field image the commotion this would cause. Need to put the fire out now.- Top
