'72 454 Water Pump Studs (?) with A/C, PS, and Alternator

1972, 454 with A/C, power steering, and alternator (A.I.R. was removed long ago prior to my ownership)

I believe I deciphered the pics in the judging manual but would like to make sure (my AIM is just about worthless in helping illustrate this). When looking at the water pump head-on, are what are the situations where a stud is used on the upper right side rather than a bolt? The lower right bolt hole gets a stud for the idler pulley, no exceptions. Does the upper right hole 1) get a stud for the alternator bracket if the engine also has the A.I.R. bracket but 2) just a longer standard bolt if this attachment point is only supporting the bracket for the alternator?

Hopefully these show what you are interested in. Pictures are from a '72, 454, A/C, P/S with smog intact.

Thank you Leonard. So it seems on your car a bolt was used on the upper water pump hole even if A.I.R. bracket is present. I have a question about the component between the lock washer an the alt. bracket -- what is that?

That is a GM #3706737 flat washer. It is 13/32" ID, 3/4" OD, and 3/16" thick. Zinc plated.

          Thank you Joe.

I found this pic of a '71(?) that shows a stud in the upper water pump hole but no A.I.R. bracket. Does anyone know when a stud was used vs. a bolt?

Owen and Joe, I am certain that Joe's specs are exact. I attempted to measure the thickness as approx. 5/32". It does have a slight bullnose on the outer edge as well.

1971 LS5 did not come equipped with A.I.R., "smog". It looks like there is a washer on that stud behind the alternator bracket where the 1972 LS5 had the smog pump bracket.

The stud was used on 1970-71 big block applications with power steering and without C-60. It may also be present on 1967-69 big blocks without C-60. It was GM #3877646, later GM #3927111 and later yet GM #461318.
