    Re: 65 396 survey?

Engine ID was ground away at the factory and restamped. In reality it was a passenger car motor stamped to Corvette numbers. very well documented and it happened more than you would think.

      Re: 65 396 survey?

Jimmy, like Gary, I never heard of a Grind Out before. Interesting stuff indeed. Are we talking strictly about the block being ground and restamped? I didn't think there were any other Chevrolet cars that could be ordered with a solid lifter 396 other than the 65 Corvette so if the final product had the solid lifter, 11 to 1's etc, then the only change was the block restamp? I'm pretty sure the Z-16 Chevelle 396 actually came with a hydraulic cam.

Believe the car you are referring to was in the Milt Robson collection in Gainesville, GA. Best I remember it was a very low mile car when I saw it. Sadly that collection is long gone

WAYNE FOSS found an original 396 convertible in Flagstaff, AZ in Sept 1987. He restored it and found all owners. VIN # 17140 and received TOP FLIGHT . It was Maroon / Black. It was sold in 2006

Here is a typical factory grind out

Ugly but real as verified by many NCRS judges of very high levels, including a former C-2 team leader

                        Re: 65 396 survey?

Nice to see some new 65 396's being mentioned. On the subject of an actual 396 Survey, as asked by the Original Poster, it seems that most folks would like to see some sort of list compiled. There are nearly 180 65 396's listed on the C2 Registry but maybe that's a bit too public for some folks. So, I'd like to hear from those of you with 65 396 Corvettes including those who just have an interest due to maybe having owned one at some point and would like to hear your comments about voluntarily offering up info on these one-year-only Corvettes. One convenient feature of having this info on a public list like the C2 Registry is that no one person has to be the gate keeper, anyone can add their cars details whenever they like and to whatever extent they like, including pics.

I know Bill Williamson had started one. Not sure who has that now. He had a ton of 396 info. Bill was a great guy.
