eBay regularly has bottles of R12, original DuPont Freon for sale.

          Re: R12 Refrigerant

James, there is plenty of R12 available. The problem is most folks believe it's more valuable than it really is. It's a supply and demand issue. The demand is low but the sellers have not adjusted their prices lower. I just looked on eBay and a new 30 pound tank was $999. I bought a tank about 7 years ago for $275.00. If you can find a new 30 pound tank for about $300, buy it.

            James:

As stated, Ebay has R12 for sale. Typically about $20 a can or $20 a pound in bulk can. You can likely buy with just signing a waiver that the R12 will be installed by a licensed tech. Many of us have gone on-line and become EPA-609 certified/licensed techs after a few hours study and about $25 license fee. Then you can legally buy all the R12 you want.

Summer time is not the best time to buy any refrigerant...........especially R12. R22 (older home refrigerant) is now very high in price as well.

Talk to a few AC guys that service home or commercial refrigeration and inquire about buying any surplus R12 they may still have. My home AC guy literally begged me to buy the R12 he still had in his garage. So now I literally have two lifetimes of this refrigerant. But not for sale.....although I have used/given it to friends that are in need. So if you want to travel to New Orleans

Thanks for all the information. Is the R12 that is used in commercial refrigeration the same as for vehicles? There were two brands on eBay called FrostyCool and EnviroSafe. These look like R12 replacements instead of actual R12. Does anyone have any experience with these brands? There was plenty of that available and it was priced lower than the old cans of R12.

FrostyCool and Envirosafe (as well as other brand names not specifically sold as genuine R12) are NOT the same as R12. I would not use them in place of R12.

I wondered about this too. I also see R12a sold as replacement refrigerant. One site says it's just propane. Any experiences with this stuff?

DO NOT CONTAMINATE what R-12 that is your system with the replacement crap that you mentioned. If you ever take it in and they have to reclaim the refrigerant in your system, most shops today have a tester that will tell them what is in your system. If it is anything other than what it is supposed to be, they will not reclaim it.

The company I worked for used to be owned by DuPont. My DuPont friends used to say only accept "DuPont Freon 12" labeled replacements for factory R12 used in GM A/C systems.
