    C1 mystery holes

I am in the reassembly phase of a 1960 after restoration and paint. It has been quite a few years since I disassembled the car , and, unfortunately I have forgotten some stuff. Can anyone remind me of what the two holes in the convertible top lid are for (with arrows shown in the attached photo). I would appreciate the help.

Here is another try at sending the photo(s) I think I know now that the center (larger) hole is for one of the screw down anchors for a hard top (which I dont have). I am mostly concerned about the smaller holes. There are two holes located in the same top lid x (Large).jpgdriver side.jpgpassenger side.jpg on both sides of the lid near the front corners.

The center, rear hole is for the hard top hold down. The small forward holes are not original.

Those small forward holes may have been for a aftermarket tonneau cover. If you look under the decklid see if you can find traces of other filled in holes.

A friend of mine had this stored away for years. It was brand new and never used.

Tonneau cover would be my guess. My '61 had snaps for a cover when I bought it in 2007...
Snaps just aft of the door posts and in several places on the deck lid - and yes, that's Chip Foose....

Tried one of Rich Mozzetta's tonneau covers on the car actually, just missed fitting by a few inches...

Back in the day, you could get a soft top with a back window that would unzip. That window had two snaps which would hold the unzipped window flat to the lid.

                Re: C1 mystery holes

Thanks guys for the responses. Based on your inputs I have gone back and looked at previous photos prior to the current paint job. Car was Turquoise from factory, then someone painted it metal flake green (why? then it was painted red with red interior. I bought it 25 years ago after it had been painted red. Previous photos showed the small holes were not there when I bought it. I think they showed up when I had it bead blasted during it's current refurb. I believe someone put the holes in sometime prior to my ownership (and your ideas for snaps for a cockpit cover or unzippable rear window are good candidates) and they were refilled prior to the red paint job. The bead blasting or sanding could have knocked the filler out of the holes prior to the current Turquoise paint job and I never noticed. Several somewhat expensive lessons here. A key one is prior to painting, put your eyes on every square inch of the prep'ed surfaces and ID every hole, seam, imperfection, etc. and make sure you are ok with paint going on top of them. This is my first refurb and I made a somewhat expensive mistake by not following this rule. so... the top lid gets another paint after the 1/8" holes are repaired. The paint came out too nice to fill the holes with some useless foreign object.

Saw a few of these in early to mid 60's. I came very close to installing one in '65. Haan, MG Mitten and others sold them. Sorry you will have to fill and repaint.

Years ago I brought a 63 red wrong colour - if you look at the screen picture you can see the poppers inserted between the dash and the screen - center and two each side - you can also see the before and after pictures of the rear hood compartment - these again had poppers around the edge, this was so a cover could be quickly be put on - either the whole area or you had a zip down the middle to allow just the driver to get in and drive - not GM I know but I always thought kinda neat.

I wouldn't be surprised if J.C. Whitney or the like didn't offer a tonneau "kit" back in the day.
