Sequence to install TH400 transmission lines

I am getting nearer to dropping the 454 and TH400 back in my '72 and am hoping to install it as one assembly. (fingers crossed) My question has to do with when to install the cooler lines running between the trans and radiator. When in the process is it most easily accomplished?

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Owen,

No first-hand experience with this, but page 6-28 of the 1970 service manual shows step 8: "Connect transmission cooler lines" right after "remove [engine] lifting device and torque all mount bolts..." and "Connect speedometer cable, shift linkage".

Apparently the cooling lines are connected to the radiator after the engine/transmission is installed as an assembly. Note this says "connect" rather than "install". This implies the lines are already attached to the engine and transmission prior to installation but it's not clear about that. This seems like the easiest way to go.

I've done it with engine/trans and radiator in place on more than 1 vehicle.

Given the option, I'd install engine/trans combination, then use the space not occupied by the radiator to help you get the lines installed. It may be easier to install them from below. Or, feel free to wait for the radiator to be installed so you can hook them right up.

It's been 30 years since I took it all apart and I just don't remember how they fit in relation to the starter, engine mount, and fuel pump. (The radiator, shroud, or radiator support won't be there.) Do either of you think they can/should be pre-installed on the engine/trans prior to lowering the assembly into the car?

Caveat: I haven't done this. But wouldn't it be easier to attach the lines and their clips to the transmission and oil pan before installing the engine/transmission assembly? Then attach the lines to the radiator after its installed.

Patrick suggests installing the lines after the engine/transmission are in place... He's probably knows from experience.

I'd really, really, like to install them on the assembly before lowering it all back in the engine compartment. Anyone have experience that says this is ill-advised? (I'm also hoping to mount the starter and fuel pump before installation too.)
