Thanks Patrick. I don't know if I'll black it out. I like the metallic finish. The car isn't set up for Top Flight. Note the composite spring. I'm wondering if this level of fit is within what could be expected from the factory.

Thanks Richard. You're probably right. I'll leave it alone until the rest of the car is "finished". Then see if this still bothers my OCD. It may look more obvious when the spare tire carrier is installed.

        Mark,

Thanks. That's a neat setup. I checked their site and I see several models; which do you have?

Also, re painting the mufflers - I've left our S/S mufflers unpainted, and like the look.

I'm not near the garage at the moment, but I remember they offer a long and short one. I believe Corvettes require the short one to fit between the tires. I also chose the lightest capacity model to minimize weight and make it easier to move around. It can be stored on a wall but I usually keep it under the car when not in use.

            Mark,

Thanks for your info on the Quick-Jack; I bought one, and love it. It's the smallest model, likely the same as yours.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I've had mine for a couple of years without a problem.

I like your use of a jack stand as a safety back up.

Just took a peek at my '78 with original exhaust still in place and yours looks very good. Somewhere I have pics of my '77 and '78 on the rack at delivering dealer, Crumback-Symons in New Haven, IN, and yours is as good or better than most as delivered.

                  Larry,

Be mindful of the car's stability when using the stacked rubber blocks. The stack in your photo seems taller than what I use. Maybe test by pushing/shaking the car.

Thanks Steven. That makes me feel better. In any case, because of the long list of other things needed to finish the car, "fixing" the evenness of the mufflers is a low priority.

                      Mark,

Good eye. Yes, two blocks are stacked and bound together with heavy duty tape. Your stability test is a welcome idea.

The jack stand idea wasn't mine; I saw it on one of the Quick-Jack videos I watched before purchasing. Seemed like good insurance.

Larry, at first I was seeing a pic of my car when I saw yours on the jacks! I have the quick jacks and a pewter silver LS5, love seeing that color. My addition when placing the car up is putting a bottle jack under the front crossmember to take some of the weight. The weight of the big block makes the nose sag enough to make it difficult to open and close the doors. The door gaps were also noticeably wider as well.

FWIW, I don't love the idea of stacking the blocks. I once had rubber pads glued onto jack stands, was that way for a while and no problems. One a hot day I ran out to the store and the rubber slid enough that the car was only on three stands when I returned. Got it down OK but nearly stroked out...

                          Tom,

Good idea about the bottle jack. I recall reading/seeing a similar caution about raising either front-wheel-drive vehicles or perhaps it was pick up trucks that had a forward weight bias and could be prone to tipping.

Pewter silver is a nice, one-year only color, used on all GM divisions except Cadillac. Decades ago I saw a paint mix formula; it started with silver with a fair amount of green added, and then, IIRC, trace amounts of yellow, orange and brown.

From 1983, here's ours (foreground) and a color combo twin:

So off topic, sorry to all... When I bought my car in 2006 it was a mess (another long story of ignorance, moving on...) before buying my car I had never seen a Pewter silver car so I had no reference. While the car was in the shop to be painted I had gone to Carlisle and I saw the 924 code on the windshield of a car for sale but the color looked nothing like what I bought. Talked to the owner about it. He said he was about to paint the car in its original color but when he saw the paint in the can after it was mixed it looked like the color of the statue of liberty so he painted it Cortez silver. Kind of made me nervous.

I talked to the painter and he invited me to see the paint before spraying it, sure looked like the lady in New York harbor. He then brought up a piece of an original fender (We replaced lots of parts, car was a mess) with the original paint on it, was a match, very relieving. There's something to be said about letting the paint dry, was spot on and we really like it, lots of comments from spectators as well so it must be nice. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

A belated update on the new Corvette Central exhaust installed on my 1970 454. I started it up for the first time with the new exhaust a few months ago. My first thought was "it's a bit loud." While driving it's not intrusive, or even (much) louder than stock. But at idle it emits a commanding resonate tone. It's not the sound of an open exhaust, nor a loud lopey sound (this is an all stock LS5 with a steady idle), but rather an even, heavy resonating bass tone that slightly vibrates the garage walls; a sound the neighbors feel more than hear.

A smoke test confirmed no leaks.

So I called Corvette Central. They advised they can identify the type of muffler by its seam and requested a photo. Sure enough, they said these are not their "standard" mufflers which I ordered (I wanted a quiet car for cruising and road trips), nor are they their N11 mufflers. No sir, what I have are their thundering "off-road" mufflers!

Until today, I thought N11 was Chevy's "off-road" muffler, but according to CC I have something even more special.

Stay tuned as I negotiate with CC. It's been awhile since I purchased the system (I bought sooner than I was ready because of a sale), so I hope they'll still take care of me.

Here's one of my special CC off-road mufflers:
