Keith------
L-79 engines were installed in 66-67 Chevelles and Chevy II and had aluminum manifolds and external bypass.
After 1967 L-79's, including Corvette, lost their aluminum manifolds and external bypass.
Most 1963 and later Chevrolet engines with aluminum manifolds utilized external bypass. The exception was 1970-72 LT-1. All big blocks utilized external bypass regardless of manifold type.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

According to information I have, the L-79 was available in 1966 Chevelles beginning in the spring of 1966. I do not have any build numbers, though. As a matter of fact, the L-79 was also available for 1965 Chevelles and rated at 350 HP. I had a friend that purchased one brand-new. 6,021 1965 Chevelles were equipped with the L-79. For 1967, 4,048 Chevelles were equipped with the L-79 which was rated at 325 HP.
I do not have any information regarding L-79 build numbers for Chevy II's.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I would not say that the number of 65-67 Chevelles and Chevy II with L-79 was small. There were almost as many of these cars built as there were L-79 Corvettes in the 1965-67 period-----15,556 Chevelle/Chevy II versus 18,682 Corvettes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
