I believe the by the book temperature number is 68-70*, at that temperature the choke blade should slap closed tight.

It seems you’re saying the Carb is built so well, the Carb should operate so well that only one notch either side of center is all the adjustment needed. If that’s the case, why are there 5 marks on either side of the center position?

Peter, if your in a hot climate area where temps are warm enough not to close the choke you can find a happy medium for setting the choke on a cold engine. But generally a hot day(s) you really don’t need a choke to be fully closed. I cannot really say why all the notch’s on either side of center,GM have a lot of different climates to make one carb. Adjust to, then add the ethanol fuel on top of that. Being a Automotive Mechanic for over 40 years. I have always had a hard time getting them run good at every temp. Thank god for electronic fuel injection.
