      John,

      Another approach to installing the cluster and console is to tighten the attaching nuts prior to installation then push the cluster/console forward into place as an assembly.

          It never hurts to hit those old rheostates with some DeOxIt electronics cleaner and it often eliminates static, popping, etc..
          Those old enough to remember analog TVs can recount how often "tuner" spray was squirted in the channel selector to get the TV operating properly.

          It might not always fix all the issues, but it won't hurt.
