    C3 "rubber" bumper

A friend has asked me to help him touch up his later C3 bumper; I'm willing to try but not 100% sure how to proceed....is the process the same as for metal/fiberglass? Level out the ding with filler, touch up with base coat and wet sand (can you do that on rubber?) and then clear ?

You need to use a spreadable flexible material to repair the depressions... otherwise if flexed it can pop the filler.
For major building or repair I use 3M 2 part automix flexible repair -

I prime with Spies Hecker flexible primer... and then base and clear.
I still put flex agent in my clear coat even though I have been told it is not necessarily required any longer.

The Spies Primer is essential -you can literally spray a beach ball with it and then deflate the ball a week or two later and the primer remains... even many years later. I saw one of the beach balls sprayed by the Spies rep a few years after the demo and the primer was still fully adhered this was 6-7 years ago I have not painted flexible parts without using it since. Your jobber will be able to point you in the right direction.

I added 1/2 an inch of material to the end of the bumper and did deformation tests - bending the edge to significantly greater than a 45 degree angle in relation to the added material, then primed with the above and base clear.

That's pretty amazing and nice work too!
Not sure I'm the guy for this job as a "first timer" though - my pal may need to get a pro...

Frank, Isn't a friends car the perfect car to practice on?

Yeah, but I'd like to keep him as a friend!
