    Part Numbers - I'm confused

What am I missing? It looks to me like the part number for the battery ground strap in my parts book doesn't match the part number(s) shown in my '62 AIM. I was initially trying to find out if the battery ground strap for a '62 powerglide was the same as the one used with a manual transmission since the grounding locations differ. It looks like the same cable is used for both since I don't see any differentiation between the two.

However - first question - why doesn't the part number in the parts book (#2968083) match any of those those shown in the AIM?

And - second question - there are two other numbers shown in the revision record (notes 1 & 4) which makes me wonder if the early '62's had the same cable as '61's did (#2976788 prior to 11/24/61). Was the '61 cable part #2976788?

    Thanks,
    Rick

What year is your parts book? Newer books might have superceded numbers.

      Hey, Terry... It's 1933 to 1962.

        Rick,
The assembly manuals list production part numbers while the parts catalogs list service
part numbers. Most of the time they are the same but many times they are different for various reasons.

Typically for a PG car, you can go to that section in the AIM and the changed parts and numbers will be identified. For example the the rods from the carburetor to the transmission will be shown and provided with part numbers. The attachment location of the ground cable will be shown and a different part number might be identified.

What is the battery ground strap part number shown in the AIM? I cannot read it clearly on the page you posted.

Yes! And I think this is another example of that.

AIM shows 2981079(hand written). I can't find it in my P&A books so....I'd say "Not in Service".

              As David said....
The 2968083 is the service strap for many applications, including 1962 Corvette, 23" center to center of terminals.

              2nd
The '61 cable was 3716571 and is the 55-61 Corvette strap, 16 1/2" center to center of terminals.
This is the production part# shown in my '57, 59 and 61 AIMs and also the Service part.

2976788 may have been the "production" part# for early '62.
It's in Oct 1962 Parts History on THIS PAGE of supersessions somewhere but I can't find it, or it could be a Acrobat Reader OCR hiccup in the optical search. It's not in the left columns, so must be after the "USE" term, but it may be finding 2976786.

Here are the revisions for 2981079 Cable Asm in the 1962 AIM Sect 12 Sheet 3.00

DATE SYM REVISION RECORD ECR DR. CK.
              11-24-61 1 WAS 2976788 CABLE 40790 DF
              1-9-62 4 2981079 WAS 2979813 CABLE 42649 DF cJ
              *

SYM 4 revision is confusing. 6 weeks later they're stating 2981079 "was" 2979813, but it was really 2976788. Maybe a typo. I found no reference to 2979813.

                  Richard------

I can confirm that GM #2981079 was never available in SERVICE. I can't find that GM #2979813 was, either.

These part numbers are Packard Electric part numbers. GM component divisions often used different part numbers for exactly the same part depending upon whether the part was used in PRODUCTION or SERVICE. I believe this was due to the fact that packaging and/or included parts/instructions were different for PRODUCTION or SERVICE (e.g. the PRODUCTION parts were supplied in a multiple unit box or bin while the SERVICE part was supplied in an individual box or with a SERVICE parts label).

Chevrolet Division parts were rarely different for PRODUCTION and SERVICE. However, with Delco Chassis, AC Division, and Packard Electric it's very common.
