    Plating question for gas cap on 72

    What was the plating on the gas cap for the 72. Thanks Ed

      "The large diameter gas cap is dull cadmium or zinc and has SMC for Stant Manufacturing Company in circular stylized script on the underside of the cap. (See Fig. E16.5) The gasket material is black rubber."

      We've been looking for years to see if they were gold like the service replacements.
      IF (and I say IF) they were dichromate (gold), it was a VERY thin wash which doesn't show up on cars 48 years later. Most replating you have done makes the gold very bright and obvious, so it will not appear as they did originally.

        I was incorrect. The original 1972 fuel cap DID NOT have the chromate overplate. However, I believe the chromate overplate was added sometime before the cap went out of PRODUCTION use at the end of 1974.

        It is VERY easy to remove the overplate from SERVICE caps. Just immerse the cap in a weak acid solution like vinegar or citric acid.

          My original 1974 Corvette Nov. 1973 build has a pale chromate finish gas cap, was that way when I took delivery.
