Re: C2 front inner wheel bearing seal installation; which way?
Gary:
The gold portion should be facing up when you install it to your hub (visible circumferential spring toward the interior of the hub). When you slide it on, the seal taper will slide up to the largest spindle diameter. When this occurs, the spindle diameter will "expand" the rubber and the spring loaded portion keeps tension on the spindle diameter to seal. Hope this makes sense. I use an anerobic gasket maker around the periphery to seal. I found this stuff, and use it on all my seals.NCRS New England Chapter Chairman 2022, 2024

Tom,
Thanks. I found several choices for anaerobic gasket makers. What is the purpose of the gasket maker? To create a leak proof seal? Or to keep the Timken inner seal from rotating?

I use the Dynatex part number 49477. I like the consistency and like to do the as much as possible to seal things up and help fixture them in place. I started using this stuff when I rebuilt my tranny and wish this was in my toolbox years ago!NCRS New England Chapter Chairman 2022, 2024

I have never used any kind of sealer on a wheel bearing hub seal. They are usually a press fit hammered gently in place.

I would only add a couple of things.
1- Some rubber seals are not square edge and sometimes don't fit as they should, in that case I use a little RTV on the OD. Example- 31 spline rear axle inner seals.
2- I put grease on any seal spring to hold it in place. Example is with differential axle seals, tapping them in sometimes can pop the springs. The quality of the seal is important, I use CR/SKF brand but they cost more.- Top

I have 19768 but that shows on my sheet as 69-82 I don't recall if the seal is the same on the earlier hubs. I don't buy my seals from NAPA but they did carry CR under their brand name. The box was NAPA but the part clearly had CR or SKF stamped in them- Top

Gary you can probably use those Timken seals, I would just pack the springs and if there is a question on the OD wipe it with Acetone and use some Ultra gray on it and you should be good. National has a rubber seal like that for the 31 inners as mentioned and they have a crown on the OD and the seal pushes out. The SKF are steel and tap in tight and don't work out like I saw with the Nationals.
good luck. Stay safe- Top
