    C-1 Fuel Filter Unit

The glass bowl filter assembly on C-1 carbureted cars has a metal cover!

In the Judging Guides the material for the cover is described as being die cast zinc ('53-'55 manual), die cast pot metal ('56-'57 & '58-'60 manuals) and finally die cast aluminum ('61-'62 manual).

So the question: which one is correct?

All of them, they must have used the same material every year.

Is it a "requirement" that they use the same material every year? It wouldn't appear so, based on your descriptions.........

          Gary,

Die cast zinc and die cast pot metal are pretty much the same thing, although the exact metallic composition varies.

Pot metal is a horrible material in that it will always creep in such a way as to relieve applied stress. That translates to leaks with the older filter covers.

So, if you have a choice, the '61-'62 die cast aluminum lid is a much better technical choice.

          Jim

That's what I don't know, thus the question.

Thanks Jim, my exact feelings on the pot metal not being very stable.

What I'm not sure about is if the people that put the judging manuals together were describing the cover the best they could and just guessing what the material was or if they really know.

I'm not judging their intent just trying to find out if there is a difference between a '53 cover and say a '62 cover..

Understood and appreciated, Gary. I don't know the answer.

                  Gary,

IIRC none of the 56-7 carb fuel line filters I've had were aluminum.

And were casts as aptly described by Jim Lockwood.
