    1970 headlight canister outlet orientation

On a 1970 which direction should the 90deg outlet on the back side of the canister should point? Should it be towards the center of the car, or to the outside?

The hose diagrams I have seen show towards the inside, however I used to own a 1978 that had original canisters and they both pointed to the outside.

I am replacing the ones on the car, They are not original and they both pointed the same way to the passenger side.

    What is correct?

Both vacuum nipples should point toward the side of the car. The left side should be oriented towards the left side of the car and the right side should be oriented toward the right side of the car.

This is the same for all 1968-82.

The orientation of the vacuum actuator tube for 1968 is different from 1969 on up. In 1968 there was only one actuator for both passenger and driver side. The curved tube was off-center and both pointed to the left, or driver side of the car. This changed in very late 1968.

Yes, I realize that. I was just confirming what you said since you implied some doubt when you mentioned that you had not actually looked at your car and your memory was fading fast.

I was not aware of that but it is, indeed, the case. The actuator used for both sides in early 1968 was GM #5638316. It was replaced in PRODUCTION by actuators GM #5638461 and 5638464 sometime later in the 1968 model year. The 5638316 was replaced for SERVICE by the right side actuator GM #5638464 in July, 1968. So, the 5638316 lived a VERY short life. Curiously, I cannot find that the left side actuator, GM #5638461, ever explicitly replaced the 5638316 but, obviously, it did.
