Happy new year all. Long story but I’ll cut to the chase. I’m looking for 5AE8790C-5ED4-436A-8C41-CCD8B19BD3E5.jpg Muncie M20 shift levers. Would Joe or someone have the correct part numbers ? 1968 L 79 ,M20. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1968 Muncie shift levers
Jeff------
The 1st and 2nd lever was the same as 3rd and 4th and was GM #3920730. The reverse lever was GM #3920731.
The 3920730 was discontinued without supersession in July, 1984. The 3920731 was discontinued without supersession in November, 1978.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Jeff-----
I do not think they are but I am not sure. It's also possible that there is a derivative of the part number stamped on them (like the last 2 digits).
Also, these levers are unique to the 1968 model year. I do not know how they differ from earlier and later, though. 1968 and earlier used a nut to affix the levers to the shifter shaft which was studded. 1969 and later used a bolt to attach the levers to the shifter shaft which was female threaded. I don't know why this should affect the shifter lever configuration, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1968 Muncie shift levers
One significant difference in Muncie shift levers, is the slot where the lever is attached to the shifter shaft.
The 63-68 levers had the short slot (attached to the shifter shaft with a nut/washer on a stud).
The 69-74 levers had the long slot with a notch on each side in the center of the slot and were attached to the shaft with a bolt/washer.- Top

Re: 1968 Muncie shift levers
The picture I posted of the levers are Hurst levers----------------NOT factory Corvette shifter levers. I posted those pictures only to show the difference in levers/shifter shaft changes from 68-to-69.
Regardless of whether GM or aftermarket shifters and levers are in question, the difference in installation of 63-68 and 69-74 levers will still apply.
Personally, I AM NOT a numbers person, so I do not keep up with part numbers as someone such as Joe Lucia does. Everything I own such as a Corvette, Chevelle, etc, has a Hurst shifter with an aftermarket REPLICA factory style shifter handle---------------and the factory stuff gets tossed in the river.
Thus, I have the best of both worlds with the positive shifting of a Hurst shifter, but the APPEARANCE of a factory shifter.- Top

Re: 1968 Muncie shift levers
Jeff move those rods to the low holes and it will feel like the Hurst without having to smack it to get it into the reverse gate.

Re: 1968 Muncie shift levers
Jeff------
There's no doubt that the 1968 shifting levers were unique to 1968. The part numbers I mentioned above were never supersessive to any earlier part numbers and were never superseded by any later part numbers.
The shifter shafts for 1968 were the same as 1963-67 Muncies. So, the shifter lever attachment holes had to be the same as 1963-67 and the type shown in Tom's photos. My deduction is that there was an otherwise change in the lever configuration from C2 to C3. If so, the 1968 shifter lever configuration was "transitional"----they had the attachment hole configuration of the 63-67 but the otherwise configuration of 1969-74.
I do know that the shifter rods for 1963-1967 were different than those for 1968-74 so I expect that the "otherwise" configuration difference between the C2 and C3 shift levers had something to do with the rod attachment. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1968 Muncie shift levers
I have a picture of the 3-4 lever is bent out where as the 1-2 is bent in. Is this the correct setup for 63 to 68 levers ? C858ECD3-626F-4F1E-9A3F-4BB1D3A107BF.jpeg68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!

Here is a picture of my tranny before removal. Notice the 3-4 lever is the opposite facing in. A592F237-2D15-4609-A97A-B1C7F8EE667A.jpg68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!

Yes, that's correct. They are the same lever but just oriented differently for 1-2 and 3-4.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
