Jeff,

I hope someone will be able to provide you with more definitive info about the GM bolt 120228, but the reproduction bolt from Paragon says it’s 5/16-20x3/8" with RBW headmark. But a previous posting says the bolt spec is 5/16-18 X 5/8” Regular Hex Bolt, Gr 2, Zinc. The Paragon spec of 5/16-20 is odd, since 18 and 24 are the typical pitches for 5/16.

To add to the confusion, other postings say the length is 7/8”.

Gary

Re: 1968 starter brace ground strap bolt

Looking back in past threads I found Joe Lucia making a comment that bolts were installed at the St. Louis plant then removed for the clip then
reinstalled.BBEC0744-FDFF-4A53-9C99-CEAED3CE023C.jpg So even though not much paint at this location I would imagine some overspray could be on the bolt. A 2013 thread.

Last question, the positive battery cable is in a clip mounted to the bell housing . Was this bolt installed before paint ?
if it was ,the clip was installed after ? Illustration on the right. Thanks in advance

With respect to your second question, my take would be that the bolt that was installed at the engine plant was removed at St Louis and re-installed when the clip was installed. Thus that bolt would have paint or over spray consistent with what is on that area of the bell housing. However, I would bet the installer had a supply of bolts available in the case one was dropped, or the bolt from one engine went to the engine next in line. Humans were involved so anything is possible.

Note the circled number 2 next to the clip part number. That means refer to the line numbered 2 in the note box. That might indicate a part number change for this clip. That might mean a configuration change to the clip.
