    66 steering box paint coverage

One disadvantage (of many) to taking 20 years to start to put your car back together is that you forget what you’ve done and what you haven’t done. I was going to mount my steering box to the frame today, being certain that I had painted the steering box semi-gloss black many years ago. But when I removed the steering box from its storage box lo and behold it was still unpainted. (Or perhaps it’s painted an incorrect cast blast color.) Now that I’m about to paint it, I want to know if several items on the box should be masked off so as to not be painted. The items are: 1) the three bolts and lock washers that secure the cover; 2) the lash stud and nut; 3) the splined shaft that the Pitman arm attaches to; 4) the splined shaft that the rag joints connects to; 5) the surface of what looks Ike a bearing where the rag joint shaft enters the steering box.

I’d be very thankful if someone can advise me on paint coverage, or not, for those five items.

PS: I found the attached drawing on the DB for 71-74 steering boxes that clearly states the splined Pitman shaft and nut (and presumably lock washer) are not painted. After reading other postings, it’s clear that the cover bolts, lock washers and lash stud and nut are painted. So, the only question that remains is whether the splined shaft (and bushing end) that connects to the rag joint was painted.

PPS: I just read several more DB postings and see that the rag joint was attached to the steering box when both were painted, so the splined shaft on the steering box would have paint wherever the rag joint coupling didn’t shield the shaft from paint.

Gary, I do not have a 66 JG, but could the box be painted or unpainted? If it could be unpainted just put the paint daub on it and install.

Gary,I am not crazy about getting paint on the steering shaft seal area if you take a pocket s screw drive And put a dab of grease on it and apply to the rubber and shaft at the seal area that will keep the paint away from sealing area, Once painted just wipe it clean.

As I recall the steering box arrived in St. Louis with the bottom half of the coupler. If the box was painted the bottom half was painted. The top half was added when the body met the frame ( The marriage ). This is also why the upper bolt does not have to match the bottom bolt.

Good question. I'm also interested in knowing for my 63.
