Isn't the distance across the rear slightly wider than the distance across the front (side the side). If so that would create some issues setting the toe as mentioned here.

Another way to do it using the stringline is to string parallel to the frame side rail and do the calculations to set the front tire distance equal so you know it's straight with the main frame.

I always do this stuff myself and it takes a little patience, I have not paid for an alignment since I was MUCH younger. There is no equal to a skilled tech with a modern alignment machine and willing to take time to do things right but I always enjoy the challenge.

Hi Gary, Assembly Plant alignment pits I worked in (1977-1981.........) used dynamic roll alignment equipment near the end of the line. Cars were fully assembled and driven onto the alignment station rollers. The rollers would be activated and the front tires would spin at a pretty good clip (can't remember mph) while the employee made the adjustments. ..All of this was mechanical equipment (no lasers) with vertical "feeler rollers" that came in horizontally to just barely touch the fore and aft sidewalls of the front tires as they were spinning. These feelers were mechanically attached to a huge dial indicator - easily visible from the pit - which allowed for very accurate (and quick) adjustment precision. So, my guess is - and this is a GUESS the toe-in measurements were referenced (at least back then) roughly to the center of the tire sidewall (not all the way out to the tread). Don't know if this helps or not...

Actually, it wasn't that bad of a job...two adjustments that could be made fairly quickly - then sit down and wait for another car to come off the line...most of the pits I was in had production rates of about 50 vehicles per hour (IIRC).

However, at St. Louis, you'd only have to do 6 or so cars per hour, so it seems like more of a cake job (lots of wait time).

I will say it was not easy when two guys were in there at the same time - the line worker and me taking samples with my instrumentation along for the ride, too
