    Engine now goes to 220
new items: carb, fan, water pump, electric fan.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How old is the Radiator? Blockage? Anti freeze that does not get changed regularly will cause corrosion and causes blockage. Are you running a 180 thermostat? What temp do the electric fans come on.

Wondering why you need an electric fan on a 300hp motor. If the fan is centered in the shroud, half in half out and you have no blockage you should not need an electric fan. Does it go to 220 all the time or just in slow traffic? Did you change the timing? Where did you get the water pump? Have you checked the temp with an IR gun?

Just been advised exhaust fumes in antifreeze
          does this mean
          1 head gasket
          2 head cracked
          3 block cracked?....

I had a head gasket leak that appeared to occur only when running the engine at higher RPM (>3700). The temperature would rise above 210 and there would be coolant pushed out the radiator cap and all over the engine. The cap worked correctly.
There is a test fluid and tester that sits in the radiator opening. If there is exhaust gas in the radiator, the fluid changes color. Testing my car had the fluid change color. I had the heads milled 0.005". The high temperature does not appear and there is no coolant covering the engine.
