    Re: 66 Convertible Windshield Gasket source

    Great info, thanks Tom
    I have no intention of replacing my windshield again, but at least I'll have this squirreled away somewhere, should that become necessary...
    thx,
    Mark

        I also used a Corvette Rubber gasket and it was great according to the Guy who installed the windshield ! I had to hunt high and low to find someone old enough to know how to do these old windows !

        As I still have a tube , he used and said he always uses 3M auto bedding and Glazing compound #08509

        Hope this helps ,
        Jim

          I was installing urethane bonded glass using #08609 in a 1973 model today and going through my dad's stash there was a brand new tube of #08509 squirreled away.

            Yes this windshield was original and a lot of that grey plumbers putty looking stuff was there.

            Got Corvette rubber gasket and have a Pilkington windshield that had been purchased about 10 or so years ago....I read somewhere that some had to trim the top corners of the glass a bit?

            Also using rope, do you start pulling from the top or bottom?

            Thanks guys for all the help!

              Re: 66 Convertible Windshield Gasket source

              Hi Brian,

              It was a long time ago for me, but I believe you:
              1. start from the top, right above the rear view mirror;
              2. then start pulling each end of the rope out laterally toward both doors;
              3. then down the A-pillars and
              4. finally across to the middle of the dash panel

              a friend or two pushing in on the glass from outside might help a bit, too...but maybe not needed if all goes well...

              I think if you start from the bottom, you may pop the glass out from the top
              Plus - it would probably be much harder to get good grips on each end of the rope for proper seating if you start at the bottom

              others who have done this more recently may provide better advice...

              Good luck!
              thx,
              Mark

                Brian- If you don't have the service manual, this LOF Glass document might come in handy.

                        Re: 66 Convertible Windshield Gasket source

                        Well, I got it in about 1.5 hours with a friend's help. It really wasn't too bad but have to say when we got around 25% of the way around the rope, we both felt it would never go in because of how much was above the recess in the top frame to go in yet. (I started rope at the bottom...starting at the top I would be fighting gravity). but patience and persistence and lots of soapy water it slowly went in. Afterwards I added goop in the corners but it appeared the gasket contacted the goop bed in the rest of the areas I laid in prior.

                        Gasket laid in nice with no "rollover".

                        I doubt it will leak but truly, these cars don't see water anymore.
