I have 2 Mellings oil pumps cast M55. One has a tag bolted on marked M55A and has a pink spring. The other has a green spring and the pump body seems a little less robust. Which one has the same pressure as a GM high pressure pump for solid lifters.

Re: Need help identifying Mellings Oil pumps
What year? Solid lifter engines up to very late '63 used the same 40-45 psi spring as all other small blocks. In late '63 mechanical lifter engines got a 55-60 psi spring along with and 80 psi IP gage and this carried through to the last solid lifter small blocks in 1972.
I'm not sure if any Melling spring is correct for either the standard or high pressure pump. Somewhere I've seen a chart of pressure rating versus color code and there four or five as I recall.
I also believe that both OE springs are still available from GM, and I bet Joe L. knows the part numbers.

This would be for a 70 LT-1. Does either the pink or green spring yield 55-60 psi in the Mellings M55 or M55A?- Top
