          No, Mike, you do not need to remove the nut. If you are careful to hold the two halves together and simply rotate one against the other the brushes will not come out and there will be no need to reinstall them. However, if they do come out there are instructions on how to assemble the alternator in your Corvette Overhaul Manual. I have used a tooth pick to hold the brushes up as described above. If you forget the metal part and install the alternator and connect the electrical wires you will let the magic smoke out using the drill bit. With the tooth pick the smoke will stay in the wires. If you ever had the chance to get a service alternator the brushes were held up with a piece of plastic. I think Delco had the right idea.

          Years ago we used to teach rebuilding starters and alternators in vocational auto shop class. Now days everyone is a parts changer and specialty shops d the rebuilding. Rebuilding, even beyond the orientation you ae about to undertake, is not rocket science if one can get the parts. For what you are about to undertake no parts should be needed.
