Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
Add to both front and back if 4-bbl carb. If adjusted properly, the back half of the 4 -bbl carb will also add some fuel to the idle circuit.
Add about 3-4 oz. Don't add over this amount.

Don't over think this.
Just drizzle a small amount of fuel into the primaries. Open the primaries to let the fuel into the intake runners. Wait a few seconds for some of the fuel to vaporize and then crank.- Top

Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
After I was comfortable I had the engine ready to go after sitting for 25 years, poured about 3 oz down the carb, pulled the throttle, turned the key and it started in about 5 seconds. That was about 10 years ago and it's still running fine.

Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
I do it all the time. Doesn't need much a Tablespoon will do it, but more is OK too.
I used to put a half a cup of so into the 1970 Holley the day before I wanted to start it up. Go out the next morning and clean up the gas that leaked out and swelled the gaskets. No leaks after that and it started right up. Now I have better gaskets and I don't have to fi8ll the bowls the day before. I still put some fuel in the front and back tubes and it fires right up.Terry- Top

Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
Instead of being concerned about having gasoline on hand, an alternative method is to squirt a bit of carburetor cleaner down the two front barrels and she'll fire right up...easy peasy.Leif

IIRC>John Hinckley told us in a thread a long time ago that they started the new Corvettes on the line for the 1st time by putting the
Gas(Not much about 1/4 full from a ketchup type container) down the vent tube of the carburetor. That's what I do with my vehicles(100LL Av-Gas) and
it works all the time. LarryLarry

Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
Been a while since I've rebuilt a Holley, but on WCFBs and AFBs; I've rebuilt prob a dozen; I put them on the car bone dry afterwards and the car starts in 5-7 seconds (usually on the low side of that) every time if the fuel pump and timing are working correctly,- Top

Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
FWIW hobby shops have fuel bottles with the feed off the bottom so when you squeeze them they squirt the fuel out the nozzle. I had a couple of them left over from my days playing with nitromethane RC cars.
If it's been a week or more since driving I fill through the 2 vent tubes then a quick squirt down the primaries. Get in press the accelerator to set the choke and fire off... resisting all temptation to "pedal" it. If it doesn't keep running on the first start the 2nd time it's right up to 2200 on the fast idle.James A Groome

Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
Some put a low-pressure "booster" pump at the rear of the car on switched 12V; a dash switch turns it on if the car has sat for an extended period
- no messing with raw gas and you never leave the driver's seat.
Its also useful if you hit percolation in hot summer traffic; but can NOT be used for long as the setup lacks an oil pressure cutoff switch.Attached Files- Top

Re: Putting gas in the carb for long sitting car
My system for my 68 Big Block: I crank it til I see some oil pressure. Then I fill the front bowl of the Holley from a turkey baster with a very small diameter tube attached. I fits right into the vent tube. Pump twice and it fires and settles in immediately. I thought the gas would quickly kill the baster, but I have used it for years.- Top
