    1967 Chassis Restoration

I am restoring a 1967 coupe and am using Joseph Tripoli's book on chasis restoraiton to clean and document my chasis. The book is many years old and I'm wondering if there are other rescources that I could use in addition to his book that would be more current.

Does anyone have any suggestion other than mention in Joseph's book of what I should be documenting. So far I've documented the body shim marks, frame stinceling and VIN stampings on the frame. Is there something beside half shafts and drive shafts that I should be looking for?

Attached is a frame marking I am not aware of. It is from the left rear frame rail. Does anyone know what it means.

    Thank you

Probably a "QC" mark. I'd photograph all the marks/info you find for future re-application.

      Hi Kirk,

      Welcome to the TDB...

Those should be the crayon marks indicating how many shims were supposed to be used at that rear body mount position.

Did you keep track of how many shims were at each location when you pulled the body?
      thx,
      Mark

Yes, I did; the shim marks are there as slash marks, this marking is different.

          Hi Kirk,

Interesting (a combination of slash marks/green "X"/ and one orange slash).

How many slash marks were there at that rear mount location?
          thx,
          Mark

My 67 frame has an orange slash mark at this same location. The body mount is about 15" forward and has its own white shim slash marks. I stand by my earlier statement that this mark was some sort of a "QC" mark at the rear of the frame.

I think Stephen has the answer. I've seen similar marks on many C2 frames during the body-offs I've done.

Notice Kirk's has a green X and a orange slash next to it. I'd venture to think the X signified that the frame failed some measurement spec or other special parameter at its end. After correction, a orange slash indicated it was now in spec or fixed.

                Hi Rich and Stephen,

Thanks for your insights on this...

The "green X" in this string had my mind searching for where I thought I had a photo with a green X on my chassis (no full restoration; no side pipes; and no body off - June 28th 1967 BBD).

I finally found it (2002 vintage attached) - and my "green X" was located on the left side near the middle under the door. Note that a previous owner undercoated my frame - and gingerly trying to remove that stuff w/o losing the chalk (or grease pencil?) mark was challenging.

I'm more curious, now - if these are QA/QC marks, do you think they originated in the A.O. Smith Frame Plant across the river in Granite City before shipped to the St Louis Assembly Plant?

                OR,

Do you think these marks have in-plant St. Louis origins?

                thx,
                Mark
