    65 dipstick pics

    If anyone has an original 1965 model year (early) 250 HP 327 car, could you post some pics of the handle and markings of the dipstick?

    Thanks,

                    The 65 Corvette w/SHP, FI dipstick is part # 3864974 in the 65 AIM and my three 65 parts catalogs (10/64, 1/65, and 5/65). The dimensions are as follows:
                    A = 20 5/32"
                    B = 20 15/16"
                    The difference between the "ADD" and "FULL" marks would theoretically be 25/32" or about 0.78".
                    I could NOT find a part number change from embossed to stamped.

                    The 65-74 Corvette base engine dipstick is part # 3862730 and the dimensions are as follows:
                    A = 20 5/32"
                    B = 20 59/64"
                    difference = 49/64" = 0.77"
                    Likewise, no part number change from embossed to stamped.

                    The photo of my "early" 1965 Chevrolet 283,327 embossed dipstick has a green button, GM # 3860099, which was replaced theoretically on 1/7/65 with the 3876786 stamped dipstick with green button as per the 65 Chevrolet AIM (revision record).
                    A = 20 1/8"
                    B = 20 49/64"
                    difference = 41/64" = 0.64"

                    Here are 3 photos of my "early" 1965 Chevrolet 283/327 embossed dipstick (1/4" wide), GM # 3860099.
                    photo #1 taken on 08/12/2011
                    photos #2 & #3 taken today (05/11/2011)

                    I also have a "late" 1965 Chevrolet 283/327 stamped dipstick (3/16" wide), GM # 3876786 (not pictured), same dimensions in length as the 3860099 dipstick.

                        Mike,
                        I just made a couple of additions to my previous post. The 1965 Chevrolet 283/327 dipsticks (early 3860099 & late 3876786) have a green plastic button as stated in the 1965 Chevrolet AIM (UPC 6, sheet B2). The 1965 Corvette dipstick is GM # 3862730 and has a black plastic button although not stated in the 1965 Corvette AIM (UPC 6, sheet B2). There is no part number change in the revision record in the 1965 Corvette AIM.

                        The 3860099 & 3876786 dipsticks are almost the same length as the 3862730 dipstick. The "A" dimension differs by 1/32". The "B" dimension differs by 1/8" in depth because the 1965 Corvette oil pan is a different shape than the 1965 Chevrolet 283/327 oil pan.

                        If your dipstick has a green plastic button is it not an "early" 1965 Chevrolet 283/327 dipstick?
                        What is a "wire handle"?
                        Is it possible that the 3862730 dipsticks were not available for "early" 1965 Corvettes so GM substituted the 1965 Chevrolet 283/327 dipsticks?
                        Just a wild idea.

                        Dave

                            It IS a 1965 Chevrolet dipstick, I have an Impala engine that it came out of. I though they might use the same part.

                            My descriptive “wire handle”, was just meant to distinguish its round cross-section from the flat, sheet metal 63-64 version. To be accurate, the 65 is formed from tubing, rather than wire. Sorry if that was confusing.
                            So your dipstick is from am "early" 1965 Chevrolet Impala 283 or 327.

                            I think "tubular handle" would be a more accurate description. There is also a company that made dipsticks that have a "tubular handle" with the end just crimped (no plastic button).

                            I have always wondered if "early" 1965 Corvettes w/327 engines came with a similar dipstick that was embossed like the 3860099 dipstick issued to "early" 1965 Chevrolet 283/327 models but have never found a GM part number that was replaced by the 3862730 part number in the 1965 Corvette AIM. As far as I know the 1965-1967 Corvette 327 dipsticks were stamped "ENGINE OIL" and "M". Later 3862730 dipsticks had a slightly different stamping.

                            According to Chevrolet Parts History (for service parts sold over the counter) GM # 3864974 was replaced by GM # 3862730 in March 1973. The 3864974 dipstick is listed for the 1965-1966 Corvette w/S.H.P., & F.I. (exc. 427) in my 1965 & 1966 Chevrolet Parts Catalogs (Jan. 1965 & Oct. 1965). I think the difference was just a chrome plated handle.
