      Gary,
      You are right about the old grease on there. Clean it ALL off and use a good synthetic multi purpose lube and you won't ever have to grease it again. I don't like to use white lithium on anything anymore, there is much better longer lasting stuff available these days that won't dry out. The foam pieces IIRC are insulators and don't get greased.               I like the red Mobil one in the can. Available at any auto parts store. There are other greases as well if you go check.
