    Ugly VIN Number

Can anyone post photos of the "Ugly VIN" stamping which occurred in mid-1960? Curious to see what the font and stampings looked like.

    Hi Keith,

Did you want one from the frame? Mine you can hardly make it out with the powder coating.

Hi Dan. Thanks but what I am looking for is a photo of the VIN derivative stamp on the engine pad.

Thank you very much Jim - these are very interesting to see. Do you happen to have any with the numeral "three" in them? I am curious as to how that font appears.

                Re: Ugly VIN Number

Here are some others as provided by Jimmy Gregg. Presuming that all the stamps in this thread are originals, it appears that some of the characters differ slightly. The "ones" have either a 90 degree or 45 degree "tail" at the top. The examples of the "threes" show either "tails" at either end of the character or no tails at all and the "twos" either have a "tail" at the bottom of the character or none at all. This leads me to believe that there were different VIN derivative stamps used on the St. Louis assembly line. So it begs the question - were different fonts used at Flint to stamp the engine codes?

John Hinckley had this photo from the Flint assembly stamping section. I did a mirror image to see what the character stamping would look like on the pad. I forget the timeframe of this one, but clearly shows how the fonts can vary.

Thanks Rich. That certainly does show a variation in the fonts. Of course, these fonts were at Flint and the "ugly VINs" were stamped at St. Louis. Thanks for taking the time to post that.
