Re: tar top battery
Dane, I would suggest you do some more research on this forum. I don't believe you can get a real tar top battery any longer. The batteries from battery central mall are not true tar toppers and will receive the standard deduct in flight judging...the same deduct you would get using a current model AC Delco battery. For my recent restoration, I used a current AC Delco battery with a plastic topper from Paragon. I took a 7 point deduct in Flight judging at the recent Cedar Rapids Regional. Was still able to earn a Top Flight award.- Top

Re: tar top battery
They are on eBay - you just have to wait until they are listed or negotiate with the seller, this one is new...
and then plan to hollow out, put the Optima inside as per the article in The Restorer. I prefer the Bat plus Mil Grade that is more compact and higher power.
Here is the topper - though they just dont get close to the real deal. https://www.ebay.com/itm/373607549002- Top

Re: tar top battery
Jims Battery Manufacturing Co. Youngstown, OH . Formally Antique Auto Battery. They were/ are the supplier.
Google it Dane. You will spend almost $400.00 with Shipping .
'63 used the yellow caps and the black caps. Refer to the 6th edition for this info.
They sure do look nice in a restored car though.
I bought one for my1928 Ford Model A RPU. First class sealed battery.
Now my 63 needs a battery. Trying to decide if an auto store Delco or Jims. Not getting the car judged anymore. John- Top

Re: tar top battery
NCRS should address the problem with judging the battery, the belts, the hoses and the other cheap made stuff from over the water and then all the discussions on items should stop.
Yes, it's the Restorers Society but everything cannot and will not be perfect!

Re: tar top battery
Joe, While I agree many Imported items are junk and not even close -- you know that there was a USA business person that signed off and imported those parts.
This discussion that you pointed out is still needed, not even close part should be knocked down.
The larger question is how close can you get to a real looking part - and at what cost???
Example - Most guys here don't want to pay $50 shipped for an accurate big block by pass hose for example.
They want cheap. To continue this example more than a decade ago I hear Rich M asking for help on leaks, it was clear from the GM prints that had become available in the public domain why. It was correctable, and hoses could be made.
Second -- Coveted blue stripe - I mean accurate blue, not PR royal not-even-in-the-ballpark-blue. I knew from others, and upon opening the hose clamp on my 66BB, I found the coveted blue that is so rare.
It fades It washes off, it was never intened to be there after the car left the factory.
It costs to get an accurate part.
Its a two way street, business people that do not see the market, and buyers that don't want to pay what it takes to get a correct part.
And by correct - I mean indistinguishable other than age.
And now with aging business owners closing selling, and NCRS membership same ...where are we going to be in 5 and ten years???
Still would be good to get a group and gain alignment on these parts...- Top

Re: tar top battery
Ron,
Every single time someone complains about poor quality or inaccurate reproduction parts made overseas or in China, Ron’s posting should be added to the thread. As Ron says, the crux of the problem is a US business person who signs off on an inaccurate or poor quality part made for them by that Chinese or other manufacturer, and on the buying US public which wants low prices.

Re: tar top battery
Just felt the need to chip in on Ronald's comments even though it maybe should be addressed separately. It is extremely difficult and expensive to restore a car using only original parts. This only gets worse as time goes on. I wish some more consideration and points be given to use of correct appearing reproduction parts. It is difficult to attract new (young) people to our hobby and the added expense of tracking down and purchasing original parts is likely a detriment to them. Don't get me wrong, the owners of all original cars DESERVE recognition for their cars and efforts. Just wondering is a separate class or judging level be made for the original cars. I believe we need to do what we can to attract new people into our hobby for its long term health.- Top
