    '63 Clutch Adjustment Question

The position of the swivel on the pedal rod with the old clutch was about halfway along the threads. With the new clutch I had to adjust the swivel to the extreme end of the rod farthest away from the firewall to get the correct pedal free play. The old clutch seemed to operate normally other than being a little on the heavy side but not to the extreme. Is this adjustment to the end of the rod normal for a new clutch or might I have a problem somewhere that needs to be addressed?

    Norm,

    What manufacturer? LUK by chance?

I used one on a '66 SB and had the identical result on the clevis spacing on the rod.... nearly at the end. I questioned that oddity but it performed fine. I suspect yours will be fine also, since you've verified proper assembly of the mechanical hardware.

I attribute this oddity to slight variations in the overall assembly, pressure plate and disk along with variances in the throw out bearings.

Lars did a extensive analysis and testing of several manufacturers a few years ago on CF.

Over the last 5 or 6 SB and BB LUK clutches I did on C1s and C2s, there have been no problems with results using LUK products. A few C1s have required some slight modifications in the cross shaft adjustment hardware due to the stuck-at-the-floor syndrome. Originally, C1s used a 3 finger Borg & Beck, and the replacement perimeter multiple bent finger spring design clutches can be a bit tedious to finalize.

Thank you Rich. That makes me feel a lot better about my situation. I don't know if it was manufactured by LUK. I just checked the outer and inner boxes it came in along with any paper work and packaging but could not find any reference to who manufactured it. I vaguely remember though someone telling me a while back that the ones Corvette central sold were in fact from LUK.

We had an issue recently with a newly rebuilt 409 convertible where the clutch fork was not located on the pivot stud correctly. You may be able to see it by removing the inspection cover on the bottom of the bellhousing.
