    rear main seal

    Hey Guys,
Does anyone know if a 58 fuel car used a rope rear main seal. Who makes the best leak free rear main seal?
    thank you.

Oh, yes! Induction system doesn't matter. In '58 the "739" block was used for all engine configurations and it most definitely uses a rope seal.

Corvette Central has a replacement for this seal.

Bruce, I've heard that the neoprene replacement seal is very good but I don't have any first hand experience with it.

Isn't there a replacement seal with an offset so it doesn't ride in the same area on the crank as the rope seal ?

In the world of replacement rear main seals for blocks which originally came with neoprene seals, yes, the sealing lip is offset so as to not ride in the groove created by the original seal.

Given the broad sealing surface of a rope seal, there won't be a groove and I have trouble imagining the need for a neoprene seal with an offset lip.
