Re: Who sells a non-magnetic Oilite pilot bearing
Gary,
National Bearings PB-656-HD. It's nonmagnetic and the bronze contains oil that will weep out when heated.
Although, this may not be the exact part number you're seeking, it appears that National bearings are what you're asking about.Leif

Re: Who sells a non-magnetic Oilite pilot bearing
my buddy brought his magnet to NAPA and had them check bushings for the GM line which I think he found the one listed for a camaro worked and wasn't magnetic. Most of the name brands are now.- Top

Another source is AutoGear. http://www.autogear.net/wp-content/u...hing_chart.pdf
They will custom make you a pilot bushing if needed. Oillite bronze is what is used.
They are a quality company, and I believe have the rights to Muncie transmissions and replacement parts.

Re: Who sells a non-magnetic Oilite pilot bearing
Gary, not sure if you have them in your area but I bought mine at O’Rielly Auto Parts. No luck at NAPA or Autozone.
Just helped a friend install the same into his 69 Camaro last week. Fit perfect and worked great. The second photo is the pilot bearing we removed from the car. Lots of things looked like they had gone wrong with the previous installation, I would say the bearing started to fail almost immediately. Lots of needle bearing parts found in the bell housing, it wasn’t pretty.

The needle bearing type pilot bearing is excellent AS LONG AS THERE EXISTS PERFECT ALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION AND CRANKSHAFT. This is often not achieved. In that case, what you show is what occurs. When there exists ANY doubt, use the bronze type.
By the way, the needle bearing type bushing was used in PRODUCTION for all C4 Corvettes EXCEPT 1990-95 LT5. Worrisome! I wonder why they used the bronze bushing on the LT5?In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Who sells a non-magnetic Oilite pilot bearing
I received the National PB-656-HD pilot bearing today and it is indeed totally non-magnetic. YAHOO! As soon as I opened the box and saw the bronze coloration, I was optimistic. No attraction whatsoever to the magnet. As an aside, the LUK and the Dorman bearings do not look bronze.
I also went thru the return process with Amazon to return the Dorman 14650 bearing, which I told them did not meet my expectations. It turns out the Dorman part qualifies for Amazon’s “returnless refund”, which suggests it would cost Amazon more to process the refund than the item is worth.
For people buying pilot bearings in the future, expect the LUK and the Dorman pilot bearings to be magnetic and less than optimal at best. And a bad choice at worst. Just skip right to the National item, which is well worth the $10 cost vs the $5 cost for the Dorman.

Re: Who sells a non-magnetic Oilite pilot bearing
Hi Gary:
I believe the material called "Oil-lite" is a trademarked name that refers to a porous, bronze, oil-impregnated, NON-MAGNETIC material that was used by GM for many years. The National 656-HD is Oil-lite and is easy to get. I believe that all of the GM non-roller pilot bushings are also Oil-lite.
Unfortnately, Oil-Lite material is getting difficult to source, so many manufacturers of replacement bushings are substituting a sintered iron material and sometimes calling it Oil-Lite. The sintered iron material is magnetic.
I don't know whether the sintered iron material is inferior to genuine Oil-Lite, but many people say it is inferior. So, to be on the safe side, I think it is best to use only genuine Oil-Lite.
BTW, I have also seen some replacement pilot bushings that are solid bronze, rather than the porous, oil-impregnated Oil-Lite. The solid bronze versions are non-magnetic, but they lack the embedded oil of Oil-Lite. The solid bronze versions are easy to recognize because they lack the black-speckled porous surface of Oil-Lite.- Top
