Need Advice On Trailer Tire Air Pressure Recommendations For Corvette Hauling

Have United Enclosed Trailer that has Goodyear Marathon Redials; size is ST 225/75R15. Trailer is used
for small trips(not many);less then 100 Miles. No over the road trips and hardly no Interstate Roads. Maximum
Air Pressure(From Info on the Tire) is 65 PSI. Trailer GVWR is right at 7000# so with a C2 (1966 Coupe) I am
"RIGHT ON THE MONEY". After researching this topic from the past post is appears that the major cause for
blowouts is TOO LOW TIRE AIR PRESSURE. With that in mind and safety the top interest what PSI would be
the best? Maximum 65 PSI ?? Or a little lower?? Thoughts? Thanks in Advance>Larry

Are they trailer tires? 6 or 8 ply or regular passenger tires? According to e-trailer.com trailer tires should be inflated to max pressure as stated on sidewall. This surprised me when I replaced tires on my ski boat. I would go there and double check, you could also check with your local Goodyear store

[QUOTE Sounds stupid but always have a spare and a plug kit Bill[/QUOTE]

And a jack & wrench that will handle the trailer. Don't ask me how I figured that one out.

Bill; Thanks for reply>Trailer is pretty well balanced and parallel with the ground. Not sure what you mean by
"go by tire recommendations"? Recommendations by who? Larry

Re: Need Advice On Trailer Tire Air Pressure Recommendations For Corvette Hauling

The 4 6 ply tires (205s) I have have a max pressure of 50 psi cold. I usually put them at 48 psi cold for long distance towing, as they will heat up and increase the pressure. I have a Trailex enclosed that weighs 1750 lbs., and so with one of my C2s, it is total about 5000 lbs. I have had a blowout before, but was sure it was caused by picking up some road debris and having a sudden deflation.

                  Michael,

The real time tire pressure display in my Camry shows a cold pressure in each tire of 35, which typically increases to 40 after driving on the highway for 10 minutes on a warm day. So, almost a 15% increase. If your trailer tires start out at 48 psi, I bet they are closer to 55 psi when hot.

On cars and would think trailers the stated recommended pressure is for a "cold' tire. Not supposed to let air out when pressure increases with driving.

Re: Need Advice On Trailer Tire Air Pressure Recommendations For Corvette Hauling

OK;you guys have given me good info. I will assume the 65 psi on my sidewall means when the tire is COLD. So I will
start with 65 psi COLD. If someone thinks this is improper please chime in. According to Terry's statement above> e-trailer.com trailer tires should be inflated to max pressure as stated on sidewall. This must mean when the trailer is loaded
which begs the question when MT should the Maximum Tire Pressure come down a bit?? More comments please;Larry

P.S. When the above tire gets "Warm and Running" That 65 psi must become 70+psi; seems high but what do I know??

OK guys. I don't mean to muddy the waters here but on most tires I have seen if you look closely where it shows maximum PSI on the sidewall it is followed by the word "COLD". I would think that the tire manufacturers are very much aware that a tire heats up when it is in use and allows for that when they specify the maximum cold PSI.

I run Loadstar 10 ply E range at 80 psi rated at 2,830 lbs each
IMO run a tire that is over rated than under rated
I run the psi on the side wall 80 psi cold.
