How in the world did you snap a CI water pump in half rebuilding it. Inquiring minds want to know.

        Re: Water pump

When pressing out the shaft I did not support the body I just allowed the inlet and outlet to do the supporting. I should have added a little heat as well
Then my 1989 tv vcr died on me so I went inside.

Yes I broke Frank's that I dug up to replace his incorrect SHP pump with a Base pump.Plus my bearing driver 7/8" socket was too big in the OD. 1/8" down on the press..... SNAP!

BTW, Step 4 below talks about supporting the body, here....

If one attempts to press out the bearing/shaft assembly while supporting the pump on its "legs" I can virtually guarantee that one will break the pump body. The pump MUST be supported on its body (i.e. the backing plate seal surface).

Just another example of why one needs to send their water pump to Bill Mock for a rebuild!

I too am in the hard lesson group when it comes to water pump overhaul. Then when it broke I looked at it and thought I KNEW THAT WHAT THE HECK WAS I THINKING!!

Luckily the pump was a 608.

That's EXACTLY what happened to me. I learned the hard way, too, and immediately after the pump body broke, I asked myself why I didn't anticipate that would occur. Mine was a 608 pump, too, but it was the original pump installed on my 1969 300/350. Since it was dear to me, I had it weld-repaired by a real expert. It was expensive but I saved the pump. Later, I was even able to purchase an identical NOS pump from Bill Mock with the exact same date as my original pump. Once again, VERY expensive but it was an EXTREMELY rare find. I have complete confidence in the original, repaired casting, though. I even rebuilt it using a special stainless steel seal assembly with Viton bellows obtained from an aerospace supplier. It cost me over $50 more than 25 years ago. By the way, most automotive waterpump seals have buna-n or neoprene bellows. These do not have the temperature or chemical resistance of Viton.

Ugh! I remember that - was sorta fun though running around rural Florida after dark in your late model Corvette, raiding your friend's incredible stash of C2 goodies for the right pump!

Snapped a 3782609 pump the same way about 15 years ago. That's about a $500 mistake today. Pre-You Tube.
